My entry into the Dark Shadows contest. I'm a caricature artist so I took a highly stylistic approach to the portrait. I also tried to combine colors from the various supplied images to give an overall mood to the piece.

Being a traditional artist, I used soft pastels, both in stick and pencil form to complete the project on illustration board. The original is approximately 16 x 19.5 inches.

Ghoulishly extreme in its delights! I agree with all regarding the difficulty in finding something within Depp's rather too-perfect features to express, let alone place into caricature. I've tried to draw him myself with less than satisfactory results.

Nevertheless, this is a sumptuous feast for the eyes in all of its Gothically twisted irregularities. Barnabas' multi-hued, pinched face with raccoon eyes brings a laugh, as well as a fright. The hands are utterly gruesome, yet well rendered, especially the crook of the little finger laid upon the breast. His clothing and accoutrements are detailed and colorful, as expected, right down to the inside lining of his coat sleeve with the cuff showing. Good Gravy, if the wavy trees aren't hypnotic; the teals you've chosen for the drapes, arches, and columns blow the mind for their departure into a velvety gloom.

I like that you've used traditional media. If I were Burton and in a mood for something bizarrely fetching, this would definitely be my choice.

I really like your approach! I had a hard time finding what to exxagerate on Johnny Depp's face since I think he has pretty delicate features, (part of his charm i think). But you really knocked it out of the park! very cool.

That's so very kind of you! You're right, he's a hard one to exaggerate. I wasn't even sure if I'd be able to capture him all that well since I wasn't happy with the likeness I had in my graphite sketch for the portrait. After I was able to add the makeup and dark eyes with the pastel, it started to work out. Thanks for taking a look at it!
